The other botox question prompted a curiosity...

This section of the forum is dedicated to discussions on various surgical techniques for facial rejuvenation, including fat transfer/fat grafting, browlift, blepharoplasty (cosmetic eyelid surgery), facelift, etc. Also, this category includes questions on hand rejuvenation via fat grafting. (Of note, Dr. Lam does not perform body rejuvenation except for hand fat grafting)

The other botox question prompted a curiosity...

I missed you doctor! You leave us for a few hours more than usual, and we miss hearing from you! I mean that in a good way, you are an inspiring online presence in my day. Love going to the blog and doing some thinking on what you write there.

Interesting, after reading the nice post below of someone asking about botox for the jaw area, I remembered reading about that use of botox. I would have imagined that the upkeep would imply a lot more of units! Is it because the muscles get weakened as the botox is used regularly?

Dear Doctor, I have noticed that it is rather common in some asian countries to have botox for the problem of large calves. What I wonder is...

a) Doesn't that require "loads" of units of botox?

b) What muscles are targeted? Considering that our calves are of the strongest and most used muscles in our bodies, and so necessary in most daily activities, how can the doc know what part of them to "inactivate" (so to speak) with botox so the area shrinks, without affecting the gait and posture in a possible damaging way?

c) Does the botox target the gastrocnemius muscles only or the soleus too? Because people with muscular legs that seem like cankles (that are not, I mean those with muscular calves where the soleus inserts at the heel in a way such that the muscle is thick close to the ankle... no fat but the muscular aspect of it might make the legs look like they have cankles) seem to have that problem mainly out of an hypertrophy of the soleus, versus an hypertrophy of the gastrocnemius (only?). Does botox target that?

d) Is it a one time or two times big dose thing and then an upkeep dose that is cheaper to manage?

e) How dangerous it can potentially be for the muscular fonctioning of our legs, posture, gait, etc. if the person who injects it is not really trained at it?

It is an use of botox that has always seemed to me both super interesting and scary!

On a sidenote, Doctor, say hi to Diago the member of your staff, I tsoon will be for a few days at Porto Alegre and it would have been so neat to say hi to him and handle him a card for you, on my behalf and the one of all peopl here, who, through my telling your stories and sharing what is in your blog, are thankful to you. You know you have not just educated and helped me, but helped me educate others by passing on the important info you share here.

You are the best :)
