Jowl question

This section of the forum is dedicated to discussions on various surgical techniques for facial rejuvenation, including fat transfer/fat grafting, browlift, blepharoplasty (cosmetic eyelid surgery), facelift, etc. Also, this category includes questions on hand rejuvenation via fat grafting. (Of note, Dr. Lam does not perform body rejuvenation except for hand fat grafting)

Jowl question

Postby SammyB » Tue Sep 02, 2008 6:00 am

Hello Dr Lam,

Thank you for all your time answering so many questions.

Can you tell me what makes jowls happen and how good is fat grafting for them? I looked at your gallery and it seems though the patients with face lift only have a change in the jowls. Is this right?

Thank you from Sam

A facelift will help the jowl and neck. A fat grafting will help the jowl but less than a facelift. The two together work even better for a jawline/jowl. I hope that is clear.

Thank you. Is it harder to get fat graft to stay on the jawline than other face parts?

actually, no. the jawline works very well. it just is hard to predict when it comes to trying to completely knock out the jowl without a facelift. i think the mini "jowl" that shows up in the 30s and 40s in most cases can easily be significantly improved with fat grafting and a facelift is excessive. however, in SOME 50 plus year olds a facelift can help a lot. it really depends on the size of your jowl and your anatomy to make that call. if you and i are on the fence with it, i usually err on the side of being more conservative and just doing with the fat transfer. everything i do is a case by case situation.
