Lip Reduction (Cheiloplasty) Gone Bad!!!

Postby unhappyjohn » Sat Aug 02, 2008 10:16 pm

Hello Dr.Lam. My name is John S. from Boston. I sucked my fingers as a kid and it caused me to have a bad overbite and HUGE LIPS.. I am a 49 year old white male. My lips were twice the size of Mick Jaggers. (no joke) I was taunted and teased for years. I was often called N- LIPS, a racial slur that stung and hurt me. Back in 1977 I went to the Mass Eye & Ear Infirmary Facial Plastic Surgery. The head surgeon told me he could help me. What I was not told verbally or written is that this was a teaching hospital for Harvard Medical School and students did the surgery, not the instructor. The student who did the operation was probably reading from a lip reduction manual.

I ended up with severe Asymmetry and scar tissue on my upper right lip. I was never told this could happen verbally or in writing. If I was I would never had it done. 31 years later I still have high mirrors to see my hair only. I Cant stand to look at the freak in the mirror.I was given smaller lips but was also given the first man made hair lip. Recently, I have gone to steam rooms to see if the firmness would losen up, No luck Then I tried to soak my firm upper lip in hot bearable water in the sink. No luck Then I made the FATAL MISTAKE of squeezing the scar tissue to losen up
No luck but my firm upper crooked lip takes on new shapes and sizes. I am so very depressed. Cant stand the 31 years of horrific stares from people. After all these years has there been any medical discoveries or advancements that can make my lip soft again ?
I was told that if my scar tissue is cut into that if would get as hard as metal. Is that true? Can you help me? Willing to send pictures and I would also come to your office in TEXAS. Thank You for listening,John S. UNHAPPY IN BOSTON....

yes, there is a solution. i don't know if it will work in your situation per se but it makes sense that it would. 5-FU or 5-fluorouracil injections would help soften the scar without real risk of color change or atrophy of tissues. i don't know many that do that though. you can send me a PM with a close up shot of your lips.
best,
sml

Hi Dr. Lam this is 30 year old scar tissue. Lip color change and tissue atrophy??? I looked that up and the possibility of my lip getting even smaller scares me to death..
