I have a scar on either sides of my nostrils,b/c the surgeon thought my nose needed to be cut. In 2007, I had the scars revised after 12 years. I think the scars are more pronounced now because of the indentations. I recently found a dr. who does laser scar revisions. He says he could help smooth out my scar. He says he will need to do a laser peel on my entire face so that I will have an even tone. What do you think about laser peels and laser scar revisions on African American skin tones?
I am sorry to hear of your situation. I would be very careful with a full face laser in an AA patient. I don't know your situation, obviously, but a full face laser to burn down a scar in African sense does not make sense to me. I am sorry to be critical because again I don't know your specifics. I just don't know what to say to that. Although it would be a more conservative measure if there are any raised areas, I would use a non-ablative (non-burning) laser and 5-FU injections. If the opposite is the problem where the area is indented, then I would consider dermabrasion. Although there is a slight risk toward color problems, it might be safer than a burning type of laser and probably more effective. Just my thoughts.
