hard/uncomfortable scars from plastic surgery??

Postby marcia » Sat Jul 19, 2008 10:53 pm

Don't know if you could help me butI had a "lip lift" also known as "upper and lower lip advancement" 2 years ago. To be more specific on what I had>>>>> A lip lift is performed to shorten the long lip of aging, allowing the upper teeth to show slightly when the lips are slightly parted. It turns up the upper lip creating a fuller appearance. A wavy ellipse of skin under the nose-lip junction is removed (average 5-7 mm). It involves an incision along the border of the upper lip. Once the incision is made the doctor removes a tiny strip of skin where the upper and lower lip meets. The lip is then pulled taut and stitched into it's new position. It's kinda like a face lift where the lip is pulled up. I have small incisional scars around the mouth. The final white scars are difficult to see. (I had the bottom lip done as well.) I have NO implants, injectables or fillers.

MY PROBLEM IS that my scars on my lips feel very hard, tight, firm and obviously very uncomfortable for me. I also have nerve (painful) sensations....(burning/tingling sensations and sensitive to hot and cold temperatures.) My lips obviously move a lot which constantly pulls on the scar and is very uncomfortable which acts as a constant irritant to the scars, causing them to remain irritated, inflamed, etc....It is also annoying because I constantly feel the scar tightness when I talk. Do you know of any solutions that I can do with the scars as in make my lips SOFT, SMOOTH, and to get rid of the sensitivity?? (I have tried all sorts of massaging scar creams (Mederma, Preferon, Scar Zone, etc...) to massage the scar but they do not help.) I have suffered 2 years from this and don't know what to do. (I have never been able to enjoy my full lips because of this.) My doctor who did this job is not a very good one...that is obviously why I am getting info elsewhere. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! Thank You.

Obviously, I don't have a magic cure for all of your problems. However, I would say that starting with the thick quality, my suggestion is to start with 5-fluoruracil (5-FU) injections NOT steroids, as steroids have too much of a risk for atrophy and degeneration of the tissue region. Most docs don't know about 5-FU since they don't keep up with all of the latest info out there. In fact, I just injected 5-FU into a thick lip scar on Thursday evening for a friend of mine who has been living with a lip scar from trauma for 6 months. I have had good success with this kind of injection. Also, for each lip injection I perform an absolutely PAINLESS lip block so that during the entire procedure you feel no needles, burning, or anything. that is critical. lip injections hurt. i make the experience from beginning to end mind-blowingly painless. If your thick scar extends into the white lip, then I incorporate KTP-532 laser to break up the scar and bring it down. I don't do it on the red lip because there is risk of color changes to the red portion of the lip. As far as the pain you have there and change in sensation, this may be harder to fix. I would suggest some alternative strategies like acupuncture as a primary method. Western medicine will probably fail you. I don't have a lot of other creative solutions for that problem right now. I would also have to look at your upper lip. A lot of lip advancements of the upper lip make the upper lip slightly duckish for my taste. However, I don't want to complicate matters by suggesting you have a lip reduction with all that is going on already.
