Asian double eyelid surgery

Postby Lucylucy » Tue Jul 08, 2008 3:42 pm

Dr. Lam,
I watched your videos online and really liked some of the things you said. I looked at a couple of surgeons, you are the one really stand out. Still, I am a little nervous about the surgery. There are some questions I would like to ask you on Asian double eyelid surgery:
1. How many cases do you do per month?
2. How many year experience do you have on this particular surgery?
3. Where did you learn this?
4. How many cases do you operate every day?
5. How many cases like the last third (11th) of the picture from your before&after image?
6. How much does it cost?

Thanks !~

1. How many cases do you do per month?
I DO SEVERAL A MONTH. I JUST DID 2 LAST WEEK. DURING THE BUSY SEASONS LIKE SUMMER AND CHRISTMAS I CAN DO AS MANY AS ONE EVERY DAY. I DO NOT LIKE TO DO ANY SURGERY MORE THAN ONE A DAY SO THAT I CAN PROVIDE CUSTOMIZED CARE.
2. How many year experience do you have on this particular surgery?
7 YEARS.
3. Where did you learn this?
I SPENT 6 MONTHS IN ASIA INCLUDING HAWAII, KOREA, JAPAN, AND CHINA. I DO NOT LIKE THE TECHNIQUES THAT I LEARNED IN KOREA AND JAPAN AND PREFER THE TECHNIQUE THAT I LEARNED IN HAWAII WHICH I HAVE MODIFIED.
4. How many cases do you operate every day?
SEE QUESTION 1
5. How many cases like the last third (11th) of the picture from your before&after image?
I DO MANY CASES LIKE THAT ONE. I PREFER TO HAVE A CLOSED EYELID CONFIGURATION WITH A SLIGHT FLARE SO I AGREE THAT IS A PRETTY CASE.
6. How much does it cost?
2800 INCLUDING SEDATION. I USE IV SEDATION SO UNLIKE EVERYWHERE ELSE, THERE IS NO PAIN.

1. Why did you not like the techniques in Korea and Japan (what kind of techniques were they and how are they different?)

2. Who did you learn the technique from in Hawaii - was it Dr. Flowers?

3. How many have you done in the past 7 years?

4. What is the crease size (in MM?) did you give the patient in the video testimonial and how much skin removal (in MM). Was it a parallel crease?

5. You do a lot of parallel crease since your preference seem to be lateral flare?

As an advice, would you advice going to someone who has a lot of experience in this (basically has done thousands) or what would you say is important in choosing a surgeon for this type of surgery? What about psychological readiness, what kind of people do you think should stay away from plastic surgery?

Thanks so much!

IT IS NOT THAT I DON'T LIKE ALL THE TECHNIQUES FROM KOREA AND JAPAN. I JUST NOW DO NOT PREFER TO USE THE TECHNIQUES THAT I LEARNED THERE, WHICH ARE THE PARTIAL INCISION AND SUTURE METHODS, RESPECTIVELY.
2. Who did you learn the technique from in Hawaii - was it Dr. Flowers?
NO, MCCURDY, THE CO-AUTHOR OF THE BOOK THAT I WROTE ON ASIAN COSMETIC SURGERY.
3. How many have you done in the past 7 years?
I REALLY CAN'T RECALL EXACTLY. I DO 2 TO 3 A MONTH ON AVERAGE.
4. What is the crease size (in MM?) did you give the patient in the video testimonial and how much skin removal (in MM). Was it a parallel crease?
I CAN'T RECALL. PERHAPS 3 MM. VERY LITTLE. I BELIEVE IT WAS A SLIGHT FLARE. AGAIN, CAN'T RECALL.
5. You do a lot of parallel crease since your preference seem to be lateral flare?
I DO FEWER PARALLEL CREASES BY ABOUT 3 TO 1.
As an advice, would you advice going to someone who has a lot of experience in this (basically has done thousands) or what would you say is important in choosing a surgeon for this type of surgery? What about psychological readiness, what kind of people do you think should stay away from plastic surgery?
I REALLY CANNOT ANSWER THAT QUESTION. IF YOU FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE WITH SOMEONE WHO HAS DONE THOUSANDS, YOU SHOULD GO TO THAT PERSON. I HAVE NOT DONE THOUSANDS. PSYCHOLOGICAL READINESS IS DISCUSSED IN MY VIDEO. YOU WILL HAVE TO BE PREPARED FOR A LONG TIME OF SWELLING. IT WILL EVEN TAKE UP TO A YEAR FOR THE LITTLE BIT OF SWELLING TO GET THERE. PEOPLE WHO SHOULD STAY AWAY FROM PLASTIC SURGERY ARE THE ONES WHO ARE DOING THE PROCEDURE THINKING THAT THE PROCEDURE WILL CHANGE THEIR LIVES MAGICALLY, WHO ARE DEPRESSED AND WANT SOMETHING TO MAKE THEM FEEL BETTER. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS AND ARE ON THE FENCE, YOU SHOULD SEEK A PSYCHOLOGICAL CONSULTATION WITH A PSYCHOLOGIST/PSYCHIATRIST FIRST TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE NOT UNDERGOING THE PROCEDURE FOR THE WRONG REASONS AS MENTIONED ABOVE. THE GOOD CANDIDATES ARE PEOPLE WHO ARE INTERESTED IN CORRECTING A PROBLEM THAT THE SURGEON SEES AS WELL AS AN AESTHETIC DEFICIT AND WHO ARE MATURE IN THEIR DECISION, MOTIVATED, REALISTIC, AND WHO HAVE THOUGHT ABOUT IT FOR A LONG TIME AND HAVE NOT MADE A RASH DECISION.
