Icing

This section of the forum is dedicated to discussions on various surgical techniques for facial rejuvenation, including fat transfer/fat grafting, browlift, blepharoplasty (cosmetic eyelid surgery), facelift, etc. Also, this category includes questions on hand rejuvenation via fat grafting. (Of note, Dr. Lam does not perform body rejuvenation except for hand fat grafting)

Does icing your face after fat transfer help with the healing?

icing after fat grafting fat transfer in dallas texas

Postby dr. lam » Tue Jul 01, 2008 9:20 pm

yes, a bit. i had to ice my own mom's face after fat grafting and now i realize what a pain in the butt it is. i think there is merit to it but you don't have to get crazy. i will supply you with all of the things you need except obviously the ice. what is more important is avoiding bending over and straining as well as reducing your salt intake.
best,

In an ideal world - how much icing is ideal? The more the merrier, or could too much be too much?

the more the merrier, but i usually ask 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off. however what is even more important is that you chill out about the ice more than the ice chills you. (just having fun with you, btw :D )

So if you can ice then great. And if you can't then don't worry about it.
Got it!
Thanks

Yes Icing is a pain in the butt. It starts to melt and then drip down your face and neck and etc.

One thing that I learned from another plastic surgeon where I had a nose job years ago is to use a bag of frozen peas (you can put it in a quart sized freezer baggie to help with melting). It molds to face better. But even it is not great, as the peas kinda melt and then start to stink.

If you freeze rubbing alcohol and water in a Zip Lock bag then it gives you a nice malleable ice pack. Hot tip!
Dr Lam, I have seen an ice masque for sale specifically for face cosmetic surgery. Have you had any experience with that?

I have used a lot of different kinds. Nothing is really that special. If you want, you can order your own before coming to see me.
