Fat Grafting & breast questions

Postby ~beautymyself~ » Tue Nov 20, 2007 5:26 pm

Hi Dr Lam!
I noticed that you are an expert in fat grafting on facial features, such as cheeks. I am just wondering would it be possible to use fat grafting on women's breasts when the breasts are sagging after breast feeding? What about using fat grafting to enlarge a woman's breast rather than using tradition implants? Sorry if this question might sound stuipd.

There are many products on the market today that claim to enlarge breasts naturally. What are your opinions on these products? As a plastic surgeron, do you think these are scams?

Well, personally i never try any of those products before myself nor i ever will. I personally think these are all scams. I dont understand why there a people selling all of these junk on the market.

*all the questions i asked you so far are just my curious about plastic surgery, and what plastic surgery can do to humans. I am not planning to have any of these surgeries.

Thanks Dr. Lam! Have a wonderful day.

fat grafting for breast augmentation

Postby dr. lam » Tue Nov 20, 2007 7:15 pm

First of all, I do not perform body work so I am not the right person to ask about breast surgery.

Second, fat grafting to breasts is a controversial topic. Again, I am not in a position to state my opinions regarding it. However, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) has set forth their recommendations and stated that they believe that fat grafting to the breasts may cause calcifications that could be misread as breast cancer. Therefore, caution should be exercised. Some recent surgeons who perform fat grafting to the breasts argue against this position and say that the ASPS position is outdated since it was formulated I believe 2 decades ago (I may be wrong on the exact date).

Third, fat grafting to the breasts is a very expensive and time consuming procedure since to get 300 cc of fat per breast by hand harvesting will take 8 to 10 hours I imagine. It takes me 20 minutes to get 40 to 60 cc of quality fat and it gets progressively harder as I continue. I can't imagine trying to get 600 to 800 cc of quality fat!

best,
sml
