Facial fat loss due to aging or prescription drug use

This section of the forum is dedicated to discussions on various surgical techniques for facial rejuvenation, including fat transfer/fat grafting, browlift, blepharoplasty (cosmetic eyelid surgery), facelift, etc. Also, this category includes questions on hand rejuvenation via fat grafting. (Of note, Dr. Lam does not perform body rejuvenation except for hand fat grafting)

Facial fat loss due to aging or prescription drug use

Postby DaveM » Sun Nov 18, 2007 10:21 pm

Hi Dr. Lam,

Are there any prescription drugs that can cause a person's face to lose fat and go hollow? I began taking dutasteride for my hair loss after the effectiveness of propecia quickly wore off after 5 years of continuous use. I did notice some hollowing in my cheeks prior to discontinuing the propecia, but I definitely noticed additional hollowing a couple months after starting on the dutasteride.

I'm curious to know if it's possible for dutasteride to cause facial hollowing, and if other prescription drugs can cause hollowing as well. Does the hollowing typically reverse itself upon discontinuation of the drug?

Thanks.

no clue

I have no knowledge of what medications can cause facial hollowing. Hate to say it but it is probably coincidental aging. I don't prescribe dutasteride very often so you should check the website or ask your physician.

I have the same concern. I believe some meds change hormonal levels in the body and thus causing a change in fat distribution. There are many studies indicating this. I am presently trying to come off my med and see if it is changing my fat. I have definately started looking less puffy and my hollows look better. I still want to get fat grafting to volumize my ant cheeks etc.........

People taking HIV medications can experience major loss of facial fat. http://www.facialwasting.org/

Coho, I'd be interested in reading those studies about hormonal changes altering fat distribution.

hiv, fat grafting, retroviral meds

Dave M is right. Certain antiviral medications taken in the context of HIV can lead to lipoatrophy or facial wasting. Beyond that, I don't know of any other medications that can do that, but I am not an internist or family physician. I am a simple surgeon, and as you know we are simple creatures.
