Plasma Resurfacing vs Fraxel Re:pair

This section of the forum is dedicated to discussions on managing, treating, and correcting acne scarring. (Of note, Dr. Lam is focused principally on acne scarring rather than on managing the ongoing condition of acne, which a dermatologist would be better equipped to address.)

Postby melon » Sat May 17, 2008 5:20 pm

Hi Dr Lam,

I would like to ask for your opinions on the comparison of the 2 machines in regards to treating acne scars. So far,I have heard nothing really positive on plasma resurfacing on acne scarring from an online community that I belong to with thousands of members.Thanks.

i think fraxel does not do enough in my opinion. i would say that for certain deeper pathologies, plasma probably will do very little too. treating acne scars is a nightmare to begin with. i get the best success with silicone micro but that is only to manage the deep craters. once they become relatively superficial, i then have limited options to take care of the problem. i am interested in using plasma but at the recommended settings (see point#2 below). i am curious for those who cite failure with plasma, i would ask these questions:
1. were the scars very deep? if so, plasma will most likely fail. plasma should be used to improve more superficial and shallow scars. (again, i have no idea whether it will do much for any scar. just think that it would do practically nothing for very deep ones.)
2. did the doctor do a double pass with the second setting at a full 4 J/cm2? that is the new recommended protocol for acne scars. i have not tried it yet so i don't know if it will do anything.
best,
sml

Hi,thanks for your reply.Do you feel that both fraxel re:store and re:pair are not doing enough or just the re:store which is non-ablative?Some members said re:store improved very little and multiple sessions are required. As for re:pair,Fraxel's latest laser which is ablative, was only reported by just a few members who have used it since there arent many available yet.

I truly do not have enough experience to comment.
