acne

This section of the forum is dedicated to discussions on managing, treating, and correcting acne scarring. (Of note, Dr. Lam is focused principally on acne scarring rather than on managing the ongoing condition of acne, which a dermatologist would be better equipped to address.)

acne

Postby Serena » Mon May 05, 2008 12:07 pm

Hi Dr. Lam,
Thanks so much for the info. I wanted to address a really big problem I have...acne! I am in my late twenites and never had acne as a teen. I started getting zips frequently when I turned about 23 and now, nonstop. My face is full of scars and I have tried every kind of acne cleansers, acid, gels, tonors out there, even prescription medicine but that dries out my skin bad. ranging Nothing has helped and I am getting so many scars rom the zits or acne. I wash my face twice a day and do everything I am supposed to but still continue to get them. Some are huge others medium. Some are large and bubble like and very painful. Those leave the worst scars and I never pick at them, I wait for them to go away on their own. I have thought about lasar or chemical peels as my only option but the lasar may get rid of scars but the acne will come back. I also have a sweating problem. I sweat under my arms excessivily and my hands and more so when nervous. Do I have a hormonal problem? Also, I am using witch hazel, is that a good product for me to use? Any advice helps me.

hi,
first you need to ask a dermatologist these questions. you might need something as strong as Accutane but hopefully not. they should advise you. i would not treat your scars until your skin is stabilized. as you get into your thirties also there can be some hormonal balance issues which my anti-aging center can help with. obviously, skin care and other treatments are important too.

sweating can be handled temporarily with Botox treatments at $1000. usually it lasts 6 months or so. that is if all else fails (salts, deodorants). if you want a permanent solution a surgical sympathectomy by a thoracic surgeon may be a more definitive and lasting solution. however, i don't know much about the procedure. you can start with your family doc to refer you to someone.
best,
sml
