Buccal Fat Pad Extraction gone bad.

This section of the forum is dedicated to discussions on various surgical techniques for facial rejuvenation, including fat transfer/fat grafting, browlift, blepharoplasty (cosmetic eyelid surgery), facelift, etc. Also, this category includes questions on hand rejuvenation via fat grafting. (Of note, Dr. Lam does not perform body rejuvenation except for hand fat grafting)

Buccal Fat Pad Extraction gone bad.

Postby greggpow » Thu Mar 27, 2008 6:14 pm

Hi Dr. Lam

I had Buccal Fat Pad Extraction about three years ago at age 33. I hadn't lost ANY facial fat (I had a babyface my whole life) up to age 33 so I was relatively confident I wouldn't see drastic facial fat loss after my buccal extraction. Well, I was wrong, about two years ago, my face started to thin drastically, and I now look quite unnatural.. gaunt and tired looking.

So my question is... Have you corrected agressive buccal fat pad removal before? Often? Is there any difference filling cheeks that have lost fat naturally versus cheeks that have had the buccal pad removed?

Thanks

In general, the difference between someone who has had it removed surgically versus lost it naturally is not great. There can be more scarring and possibly less take of the graft but this is unlikely. In general, you should be a good candidate. Yes, I have corrected a lot of people with this problem.
best,
