Smoking and Fat Grafting

This section of the forum is dedicated to discussions on various surgical techniques for facial rejuvenation, including fat transfer/fat grafting, browlift, blepharoplasty (cosmetic eyelid surgery), facelift, etc. Also, this category includes questions on hand rejuvenation via fat grafting. (Of note, Dr. Lam does not perform body rejuvenation except for hand fat grafting)

Smoking and Fat Grafting

Postby motherofpearl » Mon Feb 25, 2008 1:35 am

Hi Dr. Lam

If one is a light smoker, can this adversely affect the outcome of fat grafting? Lets say a patient gives up smoking for maybe 3 weeks before and after the procedure but then returns to his/her light smoking behaviour afterwards, will that create faster absorption of the fat or other adverse outcomes? Thanks for your answer and all the honesty and hard work that you put into these questions on your forum

I have done fat grafting on smokers with pretty good retention but there are no guarantees if you are a smoker. I have done it also in smokers who quite afterwards, i.e., no more every, and they have held too. Try quitting first as best you can. I know that must not be easy but I would still be willing to do the procedure for you if you stop and start as you mentioned and are willing to accept the possible need for a touch-up.
