Lip lifts

Postby ThinkBig » Sun Feb 24, 2008 8:23 pm

Hi Dr. Lam

I'm curious what are the available options for men who have longer upper lips and want to remove some distance between their upper lip and nose area. Is a traditional bullhorn lip lift what you would recommend or can fillers also be of benefit? I've heard that for people looking to reduce the distance, then fillers would be not work because it will add more weight to the lip and weigh it down more and cause even less upper tooth show, adding to the problem. I'd like to know if there is a way to remove the white space between the upper lip and nose, yet retain a masculine look. Have you come across this in your practice, or can you recommend someone who specializes in this type of procedure? Thanks

Very good question. I really don't do a lot of lip lifts for the reason that I am afraid of exposing too much red lip in either a female or a male. Sometimes it can look a bit done. I'm also afraid of scarring even though in general it is not too bad in women who are willing to wear makeup. In men, the risk starts to exceed the benefit in my opinion. However, if you find the right surgeon for you, that will obviously help. I am probably not that surgeon. I always look at risk benefit ratios when deciding to perform a procedure on someone. The risk must be acceptably low, especially with the potential for any scarring in the central face.
