Restylane Question

Postby awils006 » Sun Feb 24, 2008 7:09 pm

Hello,

I once posted a question on here before regarding my concern in improving depressed acne scars with injectable fillers. I did go see a Board certified Dermatologist whom is a Platinum Plus Restylane Physician. Having done five or six Fraxel laser treatments, I'm not as pleased as all the media hype in acne scar revision is. I do realize I will probably never achieve 100% permanent satisfaction, however that is not to say I wish to give up either.

To the quick question you may be able to inform me on, can injectable fillers in the use of improving acne scars potentially make the actual depression of the scar any bigger over any period of time? I may be a little naive about how EXACTLY it works, but just the thought of a substance being in the subcutaneous layer or deeper dermis over any period of time, to me, seems like it could in fact make the depression bigger maybe? Essentially acting as a non active pimple which was initially how the scar was created. Especially in my case, having acne scars, my skin is already abnormal in that it obviously can not produce enough collagen or hyaluronic acid to naturally fill in my depressions. In all of this I am referring to the use of Restylane, or Perlane (the two I wish to start off with, I'm going with Restylane first).

I feel I really am not uncomfortable with my whole face, just rather a few deeper depressions in one of my cheeks creates a very weird look, and I wish to only diminish these few scars that I feel dramatically alters the way I look, and in turn how I feel. Area upon injection is located near or above my left naso-labial line.

Thank you again.

Hmm, those are difficult questions to answer. In general, as I mentioned in a previous forum blog that Restylane can actually improve the scars over time, even at times permanently (but not that commonly). (Please search the previous forum response for a detailed response.) I don't know about making them worse. I guess anything certainly is possible. I could see that if the scar were fresh, and you injected something in there that you could create a problem. In a mature scar, I doubt this would be a problem.
best,

Sorry,

So medically speaking, what differentiates an old scar from a new one? the unhealed broken capillaries?

Thanks again

nothing really. just time. just that it is no longer red with an open wound. even a few months later i would probably consider it "old".

Oh, okay. Makes sense (ha).

BTW, I was watching your lectures on Leadership and Marketing which I really enjoyed. I found them to be quite informative being just an average 19 year old. I was curious if you could inform me on the authors of the particular books you were talking about, and citing. Particularly the one about leadership with a title to that of, "Rich Dad Poor Dad", who is the author of that particular piece? Your explanation on the mentor mentality and leading leaders and not followers is really interesting as I myself wouldn't say I have any kind of entrepreneurship skills but am very interested in the personality's, perspectives, and philosophies in the people of such status.

Also you spoke about a book, or author explaining how communication is key and how one speaks illustrates their personality. It was in your, "Leadership" video. Would you mind letting me in on that particular source of information?

Rich Dad, Poor Dad is written by Robert Kiyosaki. He wrote a whole series of books with that title. I can't recall which book you are referring too about communication (I have read so many) but probably the best book out there is John Maxwell's 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership.
Enjoy!

Now I'm drawn in--the mention of the v-lectures--just watched the one on leadership--AWESOME. You are an absolutely phenomenal speaker and IMO, the more extemporaneous, the better.

Ayn Rand--very interesting, Dr. Lam! Hmmmm!

Off to buy more books.

Keep shining, Dr. Lam.
