dip after fat grafting

This section of the forum is dedicated to discussions on various surgical techniques for facial rejuvenation, including fat transfer/fat grafting, browlift, blepharoplasty (cosmetic eyelid surgery), facelift, etc. Also, this category includes questions on hand rejuvenation via fat grafting. (Of note, Dr. Lam does not perform body rejuvenation except for hand fat grafting)

dip after fat grafting

Postby 1up » Sun Feb 10, 2008 4:10 pm

hi Dr. Lam,

is it possible that one can have a dip in appearance after the swelling has decreased post fat grafting. I have had fat grafting to the orbital rim with a reputable doctor outside of the United states, and whilst it looked fantastic for the first week after the procedure, at ten days out now the swelling has diminished and it appears almost like its original state. Do you find that this ever happens and that as the week go on it may begin to look more filled out again? Or is it possible that either the fat has a) already been reabsorbed into my body or b) the doctor undefilled the area?

Thanks for your help Dr. Lam

my feeling is that if it has dipped that quickly, you were underfilled. generally, if i see a dip it is between 2 to 6 months, then it starts to look good again. of course, i don't know your situation, and you can always give it time. also, this is why i don't just fill the orbital rim. that is fixing a small problem. the cheek, jawline, brow, buccal transitions, etc. are just as important. most people only see the empty rim and have no idea what i am talking about until i show them my photos in detailed analysis. that is why my fat grafting looks so good and my patients look so young because it requires a comprehensive perspective on aging. and, no, you will not look "fat". as you see in my previous blogs, i highly discourage just filling the orbital rim.
best,
sml
