(Asian Rhinoplasty) Nose tip surgery

Postby nomisme » Mon Jan 21, 2008 1:55 am

Dear Dr Lam,
I am thinking of doing a nose tip surgery because I strongly believe my nose tip looks different than most others. My nose tip is so wide that it pushes my two nostrils apart making them like a equilibrium triangle while others have a pair of narrow triangular shaped nostrils. I have been depressed with my nose for more than 10 years, every day I am living in pain. I truly believe a nose surgery will not make me much more handsome but I am sure that it will help me to restore my previous confidence and put more of my attentions into my studies and work instead of worrying about my nose and others' opionions.
Well, my concern is that if it is the case that my nose tip has overgrown bone structure or overgrown soft tissue( oil glands, thicker skin), by removing those excess tissue and placing back with the skin layer, will my nose become very loose??(since the skin layer used to be shaped by the original large amount of tissue and suddenly removing them will it cause deformation of the nose tip and nostrils??)
I heard people saying that if a person has a big nose tip, it may be there are mass of sebum glands underneath the skin. Can they be removed to make the nose smaller without harming the skin texture and proper growth of skin cells???
Also, I would like to know the approximate cost of doing the surgery..
You are the best Dr lam.
Feel so warm to talk with you......
Thank you.

Hi,
These are good questions. Of course, only an in-person consultation will help me to make an accurate assessment. in short, I will say that thick Asian skin can be thinned down but only somewhat. If I elect to do that, which I do in about 30% of my Asian rhinoplasties, I will require you to tape your nose every night for 2 to 3 months in order to reduce the swelling and also to prevent scar tissue from forming underneath that can lead actually to a larger nose. That is why taping the nose at night can be quite helpful for many Asian following rhinoplasty. Again, some skin reduction can be undertaken but the nose cannot be entirely reduced in that fashion.
Best,
SML
