Overresected Jawline in Jaw Shaving Surgery

Postby uglyisokay » Wed Dec 19, 2012 5:34 pm

Hi Dr. Lam,

I had a jaw shaving surgery done in surgery 7 months ago. On one side of my face, too much bone was shaved off of my jawline. Can fat grafting be used to "fill in" the area where too much bone was resected? It is about the size of a quarter. Are there better alternatives, such as bone graft or artifical bone?

fat grafting is unreliable to do that and also my fluctuate with weight if you do an isolated area. personally i would use some permanent filler like artefill. in good hands that is an easy solution.

I'm 28 and I've been 5'3 and 100-110lbs since I was 12. I don't really foresee gaining/losing weight any time soon, nor am I planning to have children. I would really like to restore a smooth contour to my jawline that is caused by overresected bone.

Is Artefill typically used for this purpose - to fill in bone defects? Is it prone to migrating or becoming infected or rejected by the body?

artefill probably is your best bet then. it does not migrate, change with weight. it can get infected if you have a major accident or major dental abscess theoretically but i have never seen that happen. it is bioinert and does not get rejected by the body BUT you have to have a skin test first to make sure you are not allergic to the cow collagen component. you need that a minimum of 3 days before the procedure but can obviously do it anytime longer than that period of time. just make sure you go to someone very experienced with artefill because the one negative is that it is irreversible. :)
