lip reduction

Postby jrnelson81 » Tue Oct 16, 2012 2:38 pm

Hi Dr. Lam. I am interested in having a lip reduction procedure done. I have attached a picture. I really want the bottom lip reduced and reshaped. Do you think i should have both lips reduced?

Is lip reduction a safe surgery? I'm really afraid of all these operations, although I'm considering having a lip reduction. I've looked through many reviews, but still can't understand what risks I may be facing. Would you advise something?

@jrnelson81, yes i would consider doing both lips if you could. the reason is that when you work on the bottom lip, you have to be very conservative without doing the top one because it won't look right. your bottom lip should not be smaller than your top lip.

@bumbleebee, yes, i believe a lip reduction is very safe if you go to someone who has done hundreds and is experienced with the technique. the major risks are numbness (and you can have some mild persistent numbness but in almost all cases the lips are fully restored in a few weeks to months), scarring (but this is unusual and treatable with 5FU injections, which is a scar dissolver), and tightness (which again should resolve over a few weeks to months), asymmetry (very unlikely but possible), over or under reduction along with showing too much teeth and a gummy smile. this is something we should discuss when i review how much reduction we are planning to do and how much gum you naturally are showing too. hope that helps.
best,

Hi! I'm thinking about having a lip reduction, but I'm very afraid. I've read a lot of reviews, and in many of them patients describe negative consequences of the surgery. What would you advise? Should I have the surgery?

as with any procedure there are risks but those risks are minimal in experienced hands. there is always risk of some uneveness or taking too much lip down but i think in the vast majority of cases it is very safe in skilled hands. i get very safe results because i do this all the time like almost every other day.
