Insurance and Keloid excision/radiation therapy

This section of the forum is dedicated to discussions addressing linear scars, depressed scars, keloid scars, hypertrophic scars, and other facial reconstructive topics. (Of note, Dr. Lam no longer accepts medical insurance so he rarely manages cancer reconstruction or trauma anymore.)

Insurance and Keloid excision/radiation therapy

Postby Renea » Sun Jun 03, 2012 9:17 pm

Sorry if this is a duplication. I had reduction mammaplasty May 2011, due to pendulous breasts. The recovery, I thought, was going great until around mth 6,I began having pain in the incision area and my nipples were both having severe shooting pain and extremely sensitive. I kept my scheduled visits to my PS; wore sports bras, massaged my incisions;still the pain was getting worse.
Todate I have keloids under both breasts as well as around my nipples. see pics. I have excruiating pain daily, often my nipples are too sensitive for a bra of any sort. When I drive I have to hold my seat belt away from my breast as the slightly touch from the belt is painful.

The pain is keeps me awake at night, during the day I have to slightly massage myself in public anything to find comfort and relief.I've had Kenalog injection around my nipples once.Used silicone gel sheeting. My PS has suggested excision and radiation therapy immediately following the surgery of excising the keloids However, I have been infrmd insurance does not cover this procedure because it is considered cosmetic. I am miserable every single day and need help. there is no way I can continue to go through each day with this pain; at times it takes my breath away it hurts so bad. I am almost sure I have nerve damage on my nipples.
Are there any other procedures that may be covered by insurance or do you have any suggestions on how it can be covered? Also what if anything can be done about the nerve damage?I have included pictures of one breast, as well as one nipple area. I appreciate any help you may offer. Thank you in advance.

this is a bit out of my specialty since it is on the breast tissue and i do not work on breasts. however, i can say that insurance has covered keloids so i think it is how good your insurance company is and how much your doctor and you can convince them that this is justifiable. beyond that, if this is a true keloid, it is the most definitive treatment for it.
