TCA For Enlarged Pores

This section of the forum is dedicated to discussions on managing, treating, and correcting acne scarring. (Of note, Dr. Lam is focused principally on acne scarring rather than on managing the ongoing condition of acne, which a dermatologist would be better equipped to address.)

TCA For Enlarged Pores

Postby secretnotsecret » Sat Jun 02, 2012 5:55 pm

Hello Dr. Lam,

Can you give some details about the technique you use for raising deep pores using TCA? The treatments I received used a very thin shaven-down toothpick to go deep to the bottom of the pore, but ended up frosting outside of the pore and enlarging them further. Is this the goal?

Does the pore still clog, after the acid treatments are completed?

It seems like such a delicate procedure, and perhaps not always appropriate for very narrow/deep scars, such as pores, since most of the ones that I had treated (6 times) ended up enlarging, or becoming more prominent. I thought maybe you could describe how to avoiding this outcome for pores.

I have heard of some doctors using a syringe with a thin needle, and injecting a small amount of the 100% acid into the pore.

Anyway, I hope you can help. Thank you!

here is a short summary: TCA for pores is not a good idea. it does not work well and has safety issues. not to sell you my product, but i developed OVA over 2 years of R/D to work on pores as well as rosacea, texture, acne, wrinkles, tone, brown discoloration, everything. you can get it on ova-skin.com. does it eliminate pores? obviously not. but my patients have been very happy with it working on their pore size.

Thank you for your prompt reply Doctor.

I must admit, your reply is a disappointment -- since I had read and been told such promising things about TCA treatment for enlarged pores, including the original Korean peer-review articles by Dr. Lee. The doctor I'm working with seems convinced he can make this better with TCA, but I'm beginning to have serious doubts/fears, which is why I thought to consult you. The most recent session seems to have made it worse, and I am applying epidermal growth hormone and copper peptides into the wounds.

I will look into your recommended treatments though. Thank you.

I guess I just don't understand the difference between an ice pick scar (which TCA supposedly works best for) and an enlarged pore scar. Both are narrow and deep, right? I thought they were similar enough that if a treatment worked for one, it would work for the other.

What WERE pores are now, by the 6th treatment, very large gaping holes in my nose and cheek and chin area. I feel they are now something closer to what would be considered an ice pick scar. I admit, I'm very nervous that this treatment has led to permanent and irreversible damage.

an ice pick is deeper and wider. when something is very small like a pore, you have to put very very very little acid to change it. the risk is sometimes higher than the reward. with ice picks, you typically can get a better change because it is big enough to accommodate the acid.

Hi, just didn't know if this question falls here? Is the deep pores can also be a cause of having acne? I have this deep pores and perhaps once a week i get something out from it, perhaps that is a pile of dirt, now I am wondering that pore is beginning to have spongy texture and looks have pus in it? Is that acne as well? I already get several skin care product from www.acneproductsreview.org but I am not so sure if this is an acne or not.

I know I'm not supposed to respond, but I have personal experience on this.

You might have scarred pores, which are micro ice pick scars from small pimples. I just got a small red pimple last month and I noticed a scarred pore afterwards.

No need to treat (too small for tca cross)...USE A PRIMER ON YOUR SKIN, i have 5 scarred pores and all VANISH after using the Smashbox Photofinish primer (takes 2 minutes). Live your life.
