Surgery on rosacea nose

Postby nomisme » Sat May 12, 2012 8:11 am

Hi Doctor,

I am 26 years old and was diagnosed with Rosacea a few years back.
I don't have deformation on my nose yet, just few blood vessels but I am extremely worried that later in my life i may have to deal with an enlarged nose. I am hoping that you could give me assurance and confidence that the deformity caused by rosacea could be resolved by surgery.

I noticed that you were also doing surgery for Rosacea nose so I am turning my questions to you. Hope you don't mind.

1) Could the skin of the nose be restored to completely normal after the surgery?
2) Under my impression, the bumps of rosacea seem to be underneath the skin and if the nose is enlarged, it enlarges the whole thing together. How the surgery could help restore if the surgery just deals with the outer layer of the skin whereas the deformity occurs on the other side of the skin.

I hope that you would be able to give me some expert's point of view. My anxiety is killing me. I wanna know that even if i develop deformity in the future, i could still be having a normal looking nose.

thanks
nomisme

hi,
first rosacea rarely progresses to rhinophyma, especially in women. when it occurs and is advanced, surgery is the only treatment that is effective. i cut down almost all of the abnormal looking tissue so the nose can look pretty close to what it looked like before. yes, there is still abnormal tissue deeper that you don't completely remove but it typically does not look that bad so long as you are maintained on medication to minimize its recurrence. again, this is rarely and mostly preventable.
best,
