Failed upper lip reduction

Postby Theo » Tue May 01, 2012 7:40 am

Dear dr. Lam,

Two years ago I had an upper lip reduction. Unfortunately too much tissue was removed, so now my smile is too narrow and no longer matches with my face. Is there any procedure that could give me back my old upper lip and/or my broad smile? Maybe by dermal fat grafting or fillers for example? My upper lip was also left with some minor lumpy scars and an uneven lip line. Could these things be fixed as well, or would they complicate any future revision procedure? Regards, Theo

this is not easy to fix. adding some silicone injections can plump it out but if the lip tissue is tight it won't fix it completely. if the tissue feels hard and scarred, then injecting 5FU may help. 5FU may help some of the scarring you are referring to as well.

Thank you doctor for the quick reply. I see. Onfortunately I`m not that much of a fan of silicone. Are you familiar with other methods of lip enhancement that could improve my situation? There is some hard scarring, but its not that bad in terms of limiting movement or smile. So apart from some softening of the tissue, I don`t think it will improve my smile. Is it realistic to hope for new enhancement techniques in the near future that could broaden my smile, for example by improved autologous fat grafting or dermal fat grafting to the lips?

fat grafting could work but i am not a fan of it in the lip because it does not stay in most cases there. i would probably first focus on the scarring issue that can in many cases improve with the use of injectable 5FU.

I see. I`m from Europe so I`m afraid it will be difficult to find a docter with enough experience in using 5FU, but I`ll look around. Another problem is that I have too much dental show. Can this somehow be fixed? Have you any experience in treating patients with similar problems like me? I`m sorry for al the questions, but you seem the right docter for providing me answers to these problems ;)

sorry, i do not have experience with fixing too much dental show. you probably need an oro-maxillo-facial surgeon to do that.
best,
