Slightly Indented scar on my nose tip

Postby helpmynosetip » Fri Apr 20, 2012 8:45 pm

Dear Dr. Lam,

I am Asian and now is 32 years old. 4 months ago I was cleaning my nose, I accidentally scratched my nose tip. When the scab fell off, I found that the area(I believe it is a scar) which is pink and slightly indented(depth is around 0.01mm). The area width is about 0.5 cm. In addition, I found that the area becomes more reddish after taking shower or when I feel very hot. At the first week after the wound closed, I did not use sunscreen for 1 week and went out for outdoor activities. After I know that it is important to keep it out of the sun, I apply sunscreen every day when I go outdoor activities. Also, I have used some gel which is mainly used to make the red marks fade before I sleep.

During my research from internet, it claims that scar maturation takes at least 6 months to 1 year. Does it eventually become permanent indented scar(I believe it must)?
For the redness, will it eventually go away? I am getting mad about it as it is in the centre of my nose. As I know scar cannot be removed completely, what treatment can I do to improve the appearance? Is it very very dangerous to improve any scar on nose tip?

Look forward to seeing your advice.

Raymond

it should heal over time. however, if it does not the two things that i use to improve it are as follows:
1. for the redness, i use a KTP laser to manage it. that may take 2 to 3 rounds and may not entirely get rid of it but it helps since the laser is targeted on managing redness.
2. silicone micro injections can help level (maybe not 100%) but should greatly improve the situation. sometimes that also make take 1 to 3 rounds to accomplish.
each of the rounds i mentioned above are separated by a minimum of one month but there is no harm in having a much longer period of time between treatments. you can start with the laser as soon as you would like but i would not do silicone for at least 6 months preferably toward a year.

Dear Dr. Lam,

Thanks for your information. I hope it can heal by itself over time and I think I would wait for some more months to see whether the redness can fade away.

But for the indentation, I believe it must not go away. I heard that silicone injection may not be quite safe. Is it permanent solution?

Is there any other method such as laser resurfacing or demarbrasion to improve the slightly indented area? I researched from internet that demarbrasion may alter the contour of the nose or even make it deeper. What are the risks?

Raymond.

yes, wait. silicone in my hands is very safe. dermabrasion may help too if done gently. risk with dermabrasion is that it could make the area redder or deeper. maybe silicone followed by light dermabrasion may be the solution but wait.
