Keloid Scar from Cervical Fusion

Postby Yellowdaisy1988 » Sat Mar 17, 2012 9:30 pm

Dr. Lam,

I have a scar from a cervical fusion surgery in March 2008 and scar appeared on my neck 2010. I had the surgery removed in January 2011 and it recurred. I am totally embarrassed to go out in public, it appears that people near me stare.

After the scar was removed January 2011, I did not have the radiation. I was told I needed to receive radiation immediate after for several days.

The scar is very painful and often sensitive to the touch. I had the surgery at a county hospital because I lost my insurance. I would to know if you could view a picture of my scar and give me a estimate? I notice others have requested the same. After getting the estimate, I would like to know about the financing options, I am aware of Care Credit but it's best to know the about to request.

I would like to know how to get price of radiation treatments?

Re: Keloid Scar- Less Invasive Treatment Questions

Postby Yellowdaisy1988 » Fri Mar 23, 2012 7:59 pm

Dr. Lam,

Thanks for sending me the quote. I have another question about my keloid. For a keloid my size, would I be a candiate for cryotherapy, laser (burn off), or injection of chemo med in keloid. I heard that some surgeons "hollow out" the keloid to avoid stress to the skin, do you use any special techniques? I understand the removal and radiation is the best since, I had keloid remove and it returned even after injections and over the counter creams. To be frank, I have great concern about the radiation and risk associated. I've read some journal articel and research studies that slow possibly of developing cancer or problems with thryoid gland since the keloid is on the neck. I came acrosss a dermologist website that is located in the New York area; the site show horrible after effects of radiation so he recommend crypotherapy. What has been your patient success rate with keloids and side effects and after the removal of keloid and radiation.

Since, you might still have access to my photo I will email them again.

I truly appreciate you for taking the time to address my questions.

Thank you

hi,
i truly believe that radiation for keloids is very safe especially since it is very low radiation unlike for treating cancers. that being said, you must ask your radiation oncologist the precise pros and cons of having skin cancer develop. that is why i have the video by a radiation oncologist discussing those risks. i believe in the video she said it was like 1 in several thousand percent. i can say that from my experience nothing else works as well as quality surgical excision and timed radiation. my success rate is 95% and with my 5% failure it is close to 99% with a second treatment. even my failures still look a lot better, they just need another round but this is very rare that it should happen. with injections and other methods, the failure rate is 95%. i have never seen success with it so i do not do it.
