large, not very protruding ears

Postby atiras » Thu Mar 15, 2012 9:50 pm

Thanks in advance for your answer! I have a small head with very large ears… they are well-formed/normal shape, but overall too big for a small face. They protrude a bit in the middle and bottom (top of ear is close to head) but the main problem is size. Are there any measurements or ratios you use as a rule of thumb to analyze ear/face balance? Can otoplasty work to essentially hide the ears from view? Following an otoplasty, if that telephone deformity (which I see in many surgeons’ “after” pics) results even slightly, then I fear big ears that now draw more attention! And even if no relapsing occurs, the big size will still be visible from the side view. My lobes are also generous in size… do you think a combo of traditional pin-back and lobe reduction could work? How bad are lobe reduction scars? Do people tend to heal differently?

Thank you- your site and blog are fantastic.

Thank you for the kind words. They mean a lot to me. I cannot reduce the size of the ears. However, I can pin them back as you know. But it is never worth it to make them deformed in terms of the telephone deformity. I would have to see the photos really to make that decision. I do not have any golden rules in terms of ear size.

Lobe reductions really do not scar. Since I go from behind the ear that typically is not an issue.

Thank you for the speedy answer. I would love to comment on your cool blog articles but will stay focused on the ears :)

I guess I meant to ask if one can use otoplasty to disguise large ears by way of hiding them from view (obviously only from front view). To do this level of “disguising” I imagine you’d need to overcorrect, and that’s probably unnatural. And when ears are made way tight to the head, is there a greater chance of a resulting negative telephone deformity or any other springing back?

As for lobe reduction, one surgeon told me the scars are not worth it (only do it if you tore a lobe). He suggested setting the lobes back, with the rest of the ear. You mentioned you reduce lobes by working from behind.. did I understand correctly? Without exposing your own strategies-- is this a new technique?

Thank you again!!

1. pulling it back too much definitely risks a telephone deformity. you need to be very careful. if i am just doing a lop ear correction and the ear cartilage is very firm, i do tend to slightly overcorrect allowing for some relaxation over time.
2. your surgeon is right. i mean more lobule set back than reduction. if you are reducing the physical size then yes the incisions are not worth it.
