Silicone lip correction without dissolvable sutures?

Postby missyme » Mon Mar 05, 2012 3:04 am

Hi Dr. Lam,

A few years ago now, I made the unfortunate choice to have silicone lip injections from another DFW doctor. It resulted in a minor, but nonetheless annoying, asymmetrical overhang of my upper lip (see below).

I would love to get this corrected, but some bad reactions to the dissolvable suture material (non-healing, a suture granuloma, and granulomatous reaction w/ scarring) has left me a bit reluctant. Have you have ever used and/or do you offer the option of traditional suture material? Alternatively, could the procedure could be performed using cyanoacrylate (e.g., GlueStitch)? Please let me know at your convenience.

If that's an option, I'll plan to get on your schedule for the next time I'm back in the area. Just as a side note, I'm a non-traditional (meaning OLD, hah hah) medical student attending an out of area Texas school.

Thanks much for your help.

hi,
unfortunately, i really only use dissolvable sutures. i really do not think you should have a reaction to this material in the lip area. one could theoretically use silk sutures but i have never done that. monofilaments are very painful in the lip and tear through the mucosa. i would honestly say try the chromic suture and i think you should be fine.
best,
s.
