Scalpel Excision Possbile Failure?

This section of the forum is dedicated to discussions on managing, treating, and correcting acne scarring. (Of note, Dr. Lam is focused principally on acne scarring rather than on managing the ongoing condition of acne, which a dermatologist would be better equipped to address.)

Scalpel Excision Possbile Failure?

Postby DannySmith » Wed Jan 04, 2012 5:57 am

Less than a month ago I had an excision performed on two acne scars that were very close together. I initially thought the excision was very succesful, however, about a month later I am having much concern and worry.

First, the excision opened back up even after six days of stitches. It was re-closed with steristrips. I was very worried after I saw it re-open. After the steristrips were put on well it scabbed of course.

The scabs have been off for around ten days now and the right half has healed almost perfectly flat and flawlessly while the other left half looks quite depressed. This is something that seems very odd to me as to why half would heal almost flawless and the other not so well.

I feel I made a poor decision and rushed into excision but the past is the past. But before I jump the boat and start desperately swimming for shore... is one month significant time to see the final outcome?

Dr. Lam is it possible that the other depressed half of the linear excision scar may flatten in more time or should I start seeking revision options? I know without showing a picture or seeing me it'd be hard to assess and say whether or not you can treat the new scar but what possible treatment options would you have for me if I were to come to Dallas? I am located in Az so it's drivable.

in general, one month is way too early. this may fill in over time. i would give it a minimum of 6 months and if things are improving then even longer time.
best,
