Chin implant pain 10 months post op

Postby court » Wed Dec 28, 2011 5:22 pm

I had a small chin implant put in 10 months ago. I still have a considerable amount of pain, which I actually think has gotten worse over time. I do not have any signs of infection, nor do I think the implant has shifted. I had a CT scan done indicated there was no associated adjacent fluid collections or inflammatory changes. I am considering having the implant removed in hopes that the pain will stop.

Will removing the implant stop the pain, even if it is nerve related?

If it is a nerve problem, is there any test that can be done to determine if this is the issue? I do not have any numbness or lack of movement.

I am also concerned how I will look once it is removed. Will the skin sag or is there any chance of bone erosion?

I know it may be impossible to answer this question without seeing me, but is there any expanation why it would still hurt?

I appreciate any information you can give me.

yes, hard to say. however, i would say the pain issue seems to be much bigger than a risk of cosmetic deformity but that would be up to your decision. i personally would not imagine there to be any significant cosmetic problem removing the implant especially a small one. if you had a CT scan, you may want to look at coronal images (up and down slices) to see if the implant is near the mental nerve. if it is, that could be the reason for the problem and would justify having it removed. the implant sounds as if it was placed too high near the nerve but i obviously could be wrong. if it is far from the nerve without cortical bone erosion, you may also consider acupuncture or something ,i.e., if there is no anatomic danger to the situation.

Thanks for your reply. I found out that the implant is not touching the nerve. There is no swelling in the area so there really is no explanation for the continued pain. Is it possible my body doesn't like the implant and therefore causing pain? If I do decide to remove the implant, do you think the pain will go away too? Is there any chance the pain would be permanent?

Thanks!

hmmm, i have never heard of a situation like yours so i can only speculate, which is dangerous. i wish i could give you better advice. maybe start with acupuncture and if that fails then remove it. i do not know how to advise beyond that.
best,
s.
