Alternative treatments for acne scaring

This section of the forum is dedicated to discussions on managing, treating, and correcting acne scarring. (Of note, Dr. Lam is focused principally on acne scarring rather than on managing the ongoing condition of acne, which a dermatologist would be better equipped to address.)

Alternative treatments for acne scaring

Postby kalsi » Wed Oct 19, 2011 7:06 pm

Hi Dr.lam, I just wanted to know the best solution to reduce my acne scaring. I am Indian and I would say my skin color is light Asian. A year ago, i started consulting a dermatologist who recommended that i have the Pro-fractional treatment. He did say that I would need 3 to 5 treatments. Although after my first treatment i didn't see any results, and i think a got some skin discoloration since. However I proceeded for my second treatment two weeks ago and this time he recommended that i do Fraxel restore instead. It seems as if my scars are deeper then they where previously. This is why I am concerned to proceed with any other treatments. I hear that Co2 resurfacing would give me the greater results but with longer downtime which i don't mind. However i do not want more discoloration to occur that is why I'm concerned.

Therefore do you think Co2 resurfacing can be a reasonable option?
Should I proceed with the 3 to 5 Pro-fractional? (although I'm starting to doubt that I will even see 15% difference after all treatments)

I am curious about the micro silicone fillers, I just wanted wanted to know if there are any dangerous side effects since it isn't approved for use on the face. Also for what type of scaring is this filler most effective? (I mostly have rolling scars and boxcar scars, but they don't completely disappear when stretched)
I am considering micro silicone as an option if I could even get 40% improvement. I live in Canada, and i hear it takes at least 3 treatments, therefore i was wondering if its worth making the trip. My biggest concern is the possible long term side effects.

Thanks a lot, really appreciate it

hi,
1. first, i don't do pro-fractional but i don't believe most fractional treatments make any difference in acne scarring. that is why i don't use mine for acne scarring.
2. co2 increases risk of pigmentation issues. you should discuss that with your doctor. i personally find that to be greater risk but maybe your doc has had a lot of experience with people your type with that laser.
3. silicone in my hands is very safe, and i have trained with people who have used it for 40 years safely. i have used it close to a decade safely as well. acne scarring is really difficult to treat. if there are pits and dents, then silicone works better than most other treatments. really fine etches in the skin, the silicone is less effective for but i am still pretty good at treating these difficult to treat areas. yes, it takes a few rounds to get improvement. i think i should be able to improve you based on your description.
