Trauma to the Lip - Old Accident

Postby bulls011 » Thu Sep 08, 2011 6:54 pm

Dr Lam,
I was in a car accident almost 10 years ago that resulted in a through and through laceration to my lip. I have a scar on the outside of my lip which I am fine with but the left side of my upper lip is still very large relative to the other side of my lip. I've had two surgeries within the first 2 years of my accident to reduce the size of the lip, but it is still quite large and pronounced. I can also feel some scar tissue on the inside of my lip close to where the accident occurred. I am looking to have my lips evened out or get close to it and I wanted to get your thoughts.
My main concerns are as follows:
1.) That the surgery reduces the left size too much and my lip ends up looking worse
2.) Given its been so long since the accident a reduction could leave more skin and make my lip look weird (not sure this is even possible)
3.) How can you determine the approximate amount of tissue to take out given (the same doctor) has tried twice and come up short?

I emailed a photo of my lip to your yahoo account. Please let me know what you think and also how accurate you think you can be when doing this procedure.

Thank you very much!

1. Don't think so. Does not look difficult to me to do.
2. Again do not think so. I am very experienced doing this.
3. Again, experience matters. I have done hundreds of these, almost every other day I do one. Plus I have devised a very targeted way to do this that makes my work truly different than other docs. Not at liberty to discuss on here.
Bottom line although I cannot promise u perfect symmetry the photos seem to me like something I have the experience to help u with.
Best,

Thanks. What would be your major concerns for my surgery? And what are the biggest risks?

Also and most importantly how long do you think the recovery time will be?

with any procedure, i state all the risks that i can imagine and they would include over reduction, under reduction, tightness, numbness, scarring, asymmetry, and worsened cosmetic result. however, since i have done hundreds of these cases i feel that i have sufficiently minimized these risks now to a very low level. if you would like to speak on the procedure more in detail in the future i would be happy to engage in a phone consultation. you can arrange that through my office when you are ready.

recovery is variable. it can be as short as 1 to 2 weeks or rarely i have seen even a month or two of swelling in a few individuals.
best,
sml
