Is fat grafting suitable for correcting cheek asymmetry ?

This section of the forum is dedicated to discussions on various surgical techniques for facial rejuvenation, including fat transfer/fat grafting, browlift, blepharoplasty (cosmetic eyelid surgery), facelift, etc. Also, this category includes questions on hand rejuvenation via fat grafting. (Of note, Dr. Lam does not perform body rejuvenation except for hand fat grafting)

Is fat grafting suitable for correcting cheek asymmetry ?

Postby facework » Sat Sep 03, 2011 5:25 pm

I fractured my cheek a couple of years ago in an accident and it was surgically repaired but the soft tissue was not and it has left me with a substantial difference between cheeks. I'm interested in seeing you for fat grafting if it is suitable for correcting cheek asymmetry. I also have what I think is normal aging that contributes to the deflated condition of my face.

I've consulted with other surgeons who do not do fat grafting and they suggested a mid face lift and I just do not want to take that step. I know I have other issues from aging like the upper eyelids but that does not really bother me as much as the cheeks do. I've read other posts here where you stated that a mid face lift is not needed in a lot of cases. I'm male, age 52. I've PM'ed pictures, thanks for your input!

hi,
yes, i have reviewed the photos and you look like a good candidate for fat transfer both for the aging and the asymmetry. remember it is very hard to fix asymmetry. i always say the two sides of the body are not the same and can never be made the same. that being said, if you think of your face as a balloon that deflates, the irregularities of the bone that become visible with aging and with your previous trauma become covered with fat so that even if it is not perfectly symmetrical the increased volume improves highlights and diminishes shadows so it just looks more symmetrical. hope that makes sense.
best,
sml
