Nose Injury, worried about scarring

Nose Injury, worried about scarring

Postby tglasgow » Mon Aug 22, 2011 10:10 am

Hi there,
Could you please help me. I fell a few days ago and caused a quite deep wound, about the size of a small finger nail, on the bridge of my nose. It formed a nice even scab across the area, but this morning a section across the middle of the scab came away when I removed a plaster I was wearing overnight. This area then began to ooze and bleed very slightly - it has since stopped. My worry is this; the raised scabs at the top and bottom sections have fully developed and the middle section is now having to start a new scab all over again Will this cause uneven healing (and the potential for a raised scar) at the boundary/junction where the scabs are now developing at different rates?? I know people say never to pull a scab off - so I'm annoyed this happened, albeit accidentally. If you could provide me some reassurance about what happens if scabs form at different rates over the same injury that would be very helpful as I'm worried how my profile will look once the scabs fall off. very many thanks!

hi, obviously as you know on this forum i cannot dispense direct medical advice to someone just general principles that may help them. basically, the concept is to keep wounds moist with an antibiotic solution until the skin heals. in an ideal world, no scab would form, which can cause uneven skin healing in general. however, once the scab is formed, then i would still consider keeping it moist. i don't like taking off scabs because i think it can be problematic. personally, i like placing antibiotic solution over the whole wound despite scabs being partially or entirely present.
best,
sml
