complication of sagging upper lip from liplift

Postby bluebird » Sat Jul 16, 2011 9:06 pm

Dear Dr. Lam,
I had a liplift where the doctor manipulated the muscle of the upper lip and then sutured the upper lip to deeper tissues. By doing this, either the muscle or nerves were injured because just like the poster who had the complication from the paranasals, I was left with the same problem. The middle part of my upper lip does not move. The upper lip hangs so much that it is always bumping into my bottom lip and it interferes with my speech. Before the liplift I had some tooth show, but now due to the inactivity of the upper lip due to the inability to use it normally, the red part of my lip just hangs and the tissue is very loose. Do you think it would be possible to trim some of the vermillion so that I could have an upper lip that at least looks normal. I realize that I will never get full function back, but I would like to at least look normal at rest. When I talk the middle part of my upper lip does not move at all. Do you have any idea of what muscle or nerve was injured?

hi,
first, i am sorry to hear what has happened to you. second, i think if you just had the procedure done i would wait to see if nerves come back. i have never encountered that situation. i would wait at least a year from the procedure to see if things get better. if things slowly get better over that year, i would not do anything because that may mean the nerve is regenerating. if there is no improvement at a year, yes then i probably can help. i have fixed a lot of upper lip lifts using my lip reduction technique. although it does not help with muscle movement it will at least probably help with the hanging red portion.
best,
sml
