Rhinoplasty nose implant removal

Postby jkwon » Tue May 10, 2011 6:37 am

Hi Dr. Lam
I had rhinoplasty done exactly 2 weeks ago in Korea. I am currently still here and unhappy with the results. I had a I shaped silicone implant to raise the bridge and a piece of ear cartilidge added to the tip through my nostril. The reason I wanted a nose job was because I was unhappy with bulbuous tip of my nose which I feel was not fixed at all. I wanted a more define, smaller and narro now but I now have a high bridge that I feel makes my nose look even bigger than before. After removing the splint i wanted to have it removed immediately but was told by the coordinator that it was impossible to do before 6 months. I went back and spoke with the surgeon who told me the coordinator had made a mistake and that he could easily take out the implant. However, the surgeon explained that the swelling in the tip has not gone away yet and that i should wait longer to see the final result but i leave for the US on Saturday and would like to remove the silicone and ear implant while i'm here. I am very unhappy with the result because i was never concerned with the height of my nose, just the size of the tip. After seeing how upset i was he has agreed to remove it but i'm finding it hard to trust him through the language barrier and the fact that i was told initially that it could not be removed. However, i believe i should remove it before i go back home... Since it has only been 2 weeks will my nose go back to its natural state? How severe will swelling be after removal and how long will it take to go away?

i obviously should not comment on someone who is just 2 weeks out from another doctor's work. in general, it is simple to remove a silicone implant. i would really try to speak with your surgeon about it to make sure both of you (despite language issues) comes up with a reasonable course of action. i personally do not like silicone implants sitting in there for a year or two as it can cause some pressure changes to the bone underneath. shorter term is not as much of an issue but you should speak with him about these matters. one more thing when i design a nasal tip size i do so in conjunction with a nasal bridge. the reason i add that is that when the nose bridge is low the tip can then look too big if it were designed to match the nasal bridge. however, if the nasal bridge is too high and the doctor feels that there is not a lot of swelling then removal still may be a better option. these are just talking points that you can have with your surgeon.
best,
