Question on my scar (with pics)

Postby MJM.007 » Wed Mar 30, 2011 3:06 pm

Hello, I want to get your opinion/recommendation on a scar revison technique for a 20 year-old surgical facial scar along my jawline.
The scar was a result of removing a birth mark (nevus sebaceous) that at the time was recommended to be removed as it could become cancerous. The end result left me with a scar that is slightly indented/supressed. I've attached a few images of the scar. I have a thick beard where the scar is placed and since hair does not grow from the scar, it makes it quite visible and has bothered me for a long time. Opinions I've received so far:
--2 different dermatologists told me to leave it alone (this was 6 years ago)
--Plastic surgeon recommended using a fractional laser (multiple sessions)
--Another surgeon sugested scar revision using a geometric line closure technique

Based on the pictures I've provided, please let me know your thoughts on best technique to camoflage this scar as much as possible. Thanks!!

option 1 of leaving it alone is valid but obviously does not help. the fractional laser is INSANE. what is that supposed to do? geometric broken line is the best answer. if i heard fractional laser and i were a board examiner i would fail the applicant. sorry, just don't understand how that does anything. i would be happy to do a phone consultation if you want more details about this method if my website has not delivered enough info but that is your best option. you may still have a little hair loss around the incision line but your result should be much better than what you have. however, remember that anytime you operate on an old scar, it will always look worse for a few weeks to months than it does now.
best,

Dr. Lam, thank you for such a quick response! If I were to have a scar revision done (using geometric line closure technique), would I potentially have an improved result/camoflage with some sort of hair implant in the scar area several months post-op?

I realize hair typically does not grow from scar tissue but with a revision surgery, is this an option to improve appearance several months down the road? I've only read just a little about this and doesn't seem to be a mainstream treatment option. I've even read about beard tattooing. Are either a viable option to consider or am I wasting time/money?

i am hoping to get a good enough result without the need for hair transplantation. however, if you need it i can do that but i would not do a hair transplant for a year. the good thing is since i do hair transplants i am VERY CAREFUL not to damage the follicles during the scar revision procedure.
best,

Thanks Dr. Lam. I would like to schedule a consultation with you. First though, I would like to get a ballpark estimate on costs for this type of scar revision (geometric broken line closure). Based on the length and width of my scar, what is the approximate fee for this? Just looking to get an idea on what something like this would cost...

Thanks!
