Gor tex removal healing time

Postby zk3 » Fri Jan 28, 2011 9:57 am

Hi, I have had multiple surgeries to my upper lip. The first was facia implant and then its removal because it was stiff and I could not smile. I also had a nerve that had to be cut and tied off due to pain. I had soft-form gor tex put in to try to even things out but I could feel them and he put them in little pieces that were making me very uncomfortable, hard to speak and painful. In August- 6 months ago I had a surgeon remove the last remaining pieces of gortex. It was very difficult to get them out.I have been experiencing uncomfortable pain for many years. There were many pieces and probably quite embedded because they had been in my lip for many years. My question is that it has been 6 months since their removal and it still feels like my lip is healing, still shrinking, peeling, raw, possibly inflamed fluid filled and uncomfortable. It still feels very uncomfortable and painful. My surgeon said that he sees no reason why they should not eventually heal and that it may take up to a year due to the amount of trauma. Is it possible that they will eventually normalize in another 6 months? Could it actually take a full year to heal and normalize. I would greatly appreciate your opinion!
Thank you!

hi,
so sorry to hear of what you have gone through. that is terrible. that is why i do not use solid implants. since i have very little experience with solid implants i cannot speak of how long it will take to completely heal. it would only be a guess on my part and i do not like to offer uneducated guesses. i am sorry. i would say that hopefully if you see a trend that it is getting better then that is a good sign. best wishes with your healing.

Thank you for your reply. I recently had my wisdom teeth pulled and was put on an antibiotic and I started to notice that my lip was healing at a much more rapid rate. Shrinking and peeling and even small scabs, which to me is a good sign that the tissue is reconnecting. My feeling now is that I may have had a low-grade infection that was keeping my lip from healing properly and perhaps the penicillin helped kill off an infection. While it is still sore, I am feeling more optimistic. Would you recommend I stay on antibiotics?
I want to restore a small amount of fullness to my lips, with juvederm, but obviously I do not want to interfere with the healing process which is on the underside of my upper lip I only want the juvederm in the vermillion border because I like for my teeth to show and to reduce a little of the wrinkling that the loss of volume has caused. Do I need to wait until my lip is completely healed even though the juvederm would be injected in an area that is a small distance away from where my lip is healing?

as far as antibiotics, you really need to see a physician to determine if there is ongoing infection. i should not be diagnosing and treating infections on this forum. however, if the area is still tender perhaps you should wait for the juvederm until you fee symptom free.
best,
