Would you recommend that I re-cut keloid and get radiation?

This section of the forum is dedicated to discussions addressing linear scars, depressed scars, keloid scars, hypertrophic scars, and other facial reconstructive topics. (Of note, Dr. Lam no longer accepts medical insurance so he rarely manages cancer reconstruction or trauma anymore.)

Would you recommend that I re-cut keloid and get radiation?

Postby JennaP » Sun Dec 26, 2010 10:41 pm

Dr. Lam,
I have a keloid on my shoulder that formed about 5 yrs ago after having a mole surgically removed. I had it treated with steroid shots, silicone sheets, and numerous other products. It flattened out and was better while I received the shots, but when I stopped, it came back and now it's worse than ever. It has been growing and is painful. I saw a plastic surgeon in my area and he wants to re-cut it and then have it treated with radiation the day of surgery and the next 2 days. I have this procedure scheduled for Jan. 10, but I'm a little uneasy. I don't know if I should go through with it, or if it could make the keloid worse. I do know I'm prone to keloids. I have hypertrophic scars on my stomach from surgery, but they're not painful. What is your recommendation? Do you think this surgery and radiation might be beneficial for me, or would I be better off leaving it alone? Thanks so much!!

I attached a picture of it from last year, but it is bigger and worse now.download/file.php?id=795

although i cannot give direct medical advice on here, the plan sounds good in general. i would have recommended injectables first but with that being a failure before your physician's plan sounds good to me.
best,
