Is silicone able to last for a lifetime ?

Postby A-am » Wed Dec 22, 2010 11:39 pm

Dear Dr Lam,

I just did a nose job not too long ago. I used silicone for my nose bridge and nose tip as well. I am asian man. At first i was reluctantly to use silicone because of extrusion and possible of infection. The doctor assure me that extrusion only happens if the patient uses thicker silicone and has unrealistic expectation of the nose i.e pointed nose tip. He did mentioned females will have higher chances of extrusion than males due to the thickness of the skin. How true is that ?

i stopped using silicone because in general it still can shrink wrap and extrude. however, the thinner the implant and if it does not go all the way down to the tip, i.e., if cartilage is used at the tip, then extrusion is much less but still possible. as far as gender differences, that i am uncertain. yes, it can last a lifetime if it does not extrude.
best,

Dear Dr Lam,

If silicone is used for bridge and tip of the nose, chances of extrusion stands about 60% in most cases?

that i cannot say. it all depends on the doctor doing it, how big the silicone is, and about of good luck. it does not always extrude. it is on the lower side of things. 60% is pretty high. i would guess between 1 and 10% more like.

about normal not big or small but the nose tip component is where the risk increases slightly. extrusions typically occur in the tip and that is where there is a bit more risk. still low overall though.
