Will previous liposuction limit fat donor site

Postby Davey » Mon Dec 20, 2010 7:37 am

Hi Dr Lam,

I am male and previously had a liposuction to my trunk area. Fat was removed from around my abdomen and "lovehandles".

I now wish to have fat grafting to enhance my cheekbones.

However, I have heard that as a general rule liposuctioned areas cannot be used as a donor site. Not because of lack of fat (there is still some fat there), but rather because there is a lot of scar tissue in the fat. Is this correct? If so does that mean that fat grafting is pretty much out of the question for me?

Thanks,

Davey

no, that is not the case. however, it is true that it is much more a chore to remove the fat out for me and sometimes i do not have enough fat to do the job, especially for men since for women with a higher percentage of body fat i can almost always find some fat. i would have to evaluate your body to determine the situation. believe it or not, i can oftentimes pull fat from many other areas like the thighs (even in men), lower back, triceps, and inner knees, as need be.
best,

Thanks for your reply Dr Lam. This brings me some relief.

Is it possible that fat from some of those other areas you mentioned, such as the thighs, is less likely to survive post-grafting as opposed to fat taken from more "traditional" areas?

not at all. i use all the donor areas as being equally viable.
