Hyperthropic scar

Postby Hollis » Fri Dec 17, 2010 3:42 pm

Hello Dr.lam I have problem and would love some advice.

I have a decent sized hyperthropic scar on my forehead following physical abuse suffered as a child. Its about 3 inchs long, 1 inch wide and a half an inch deep. I have an apointment with a consultant in a month but im afraid it wont be a major enough problem for him to want to do anything about it which would be devastating as it has a major pyshcological impact on me. What sort of treatment do you think he will perform?

:I live in ireland by the way!

if it is truly hypertrophic, he may try to soften it with an injectable product but i would be very wary of steroid injections as i believe they have a high risk of atrophy of the tissues (that is dents in the skin). however, if the scar is not too thick but just widened, then a scar revision with possible geometric broken line can be an ideal depending on the doctor's experience with this technique and exactly how your scar looks to make sure that it is a good candidate. i typically prebotox my patients about 2 weeks before in the forehead to limit stretch back of the scar, which really really helps the healing.
best,
sml
