Epicanthoplasty Question

Postby Sunny » Sat Oct 23, 2010 7:17 pm

Greetings, Dr. Lam!

I've searched your forum for previous discussions on epicanthoplasties and found only one post having to do with scarring from this procedure (not one that you did). I'd like to ask if scars are an expected result of this procedure and if so, are they typically the hypertrophic types of scars or just hyperpigmented ones? In your opinion, is it worth it to have this procedure done and if yes, do you have pictures of patients who have had them done by you? I could not find any photos in your Ethnic Gallery.

I have quite a severe fold (not congenital) and it really has changed my appearance. My eye just looks 'shortened' or blunt. The other eye is also developing the fold. I'm hoping you can offer me some insight and maybe some hope.

Thank you so much, Dr. Lam!
Sunny

hi,
1. the technique i use by going inside the fold and not onto the naked skin truly minimizes the risk of scarring. but there is still a risk in this highly sensitive area. i cannot recall seeing one in my hands though.
2. my epicanthoplasties are more conservative than others because i do not cut onto naked canthal skin, which in my opinion raises the risk unacceptably high. i also believe that the overall impact of the result is heightened when combined with a double eyelid procedure.
3. i have attached a link of some of my epicanthoplasty results below (at the very bottom of the resources section):

Dear Dr. Lam,

Thank you so much for answering my questions and for posting the link.
Your work is beautiful! The results are subtle and yet they offer a notable improvement in the patients that were shown.

May I ask another question?
Would you perform such a procedure on a patient who has dry eye syndrome (Sjogren's)?

Many thanks, Dr. Lam! I really appreciate your response and the photographs of your work.

Kindest Regards,
Sunny

i think you need to ask your ophthalmologist that question. the only problem is that i am working very near the tear ducts (never hurt them) but something that would theoretically be a possibility as far as risk. thanks for the kind remarks.

Hello, Dr. Lam!

Thank you again for answering my question. I shall ask my ophthalmologist whether he feels there may be an issue with my dry eye condition.

As for my 'kind remarks', you're very welcome, but you earned them! Have a peaceful evening and a beautiful Monday!

Kindest Regards,
Sunny
