** Am I a candidate for Keloid Removal and Radiation?

This section of the forum is dedicated to discussions addressing linear scars, depressed scars, keloid scars, hypertrophic scars, and other facial reconstructive topics. (Of note, Dr. Lam no longer accepts medical insurance so he rarely manages cancer reconstruction or trauma anymore.)

** Am I a candidate for Keloid Removal and Radiation?

Postby tuan1969 » Thu Jul 08, 2010 1:45 pm

Hi Dr. Lam,
I have a rather large keloid on my upper middle chest area. It is about 2" wide x 0.75" ... and about 0.25" thickness. I've had it about 20 years... likely caused by an acne pimple scarring.

Do you think this is treatable with your method of surgical excision and radiation follow-up? I've tried everything so far (topicals, laser, steroid injections, etc). What's the success rate with your method?

Thank you.

yes, it does sound like you are a good candidate especially considering you have failed everything else. as you may know, the radiation must be timed to be performed at the same time, i.e., started within 24 hours then cycled for 5 days. with that regimen, the success exceeds 95%. when the excision is performed prior to 24 hours and not time with radiation, the success is less than 30%. you must time it with me to get that kind of success.
best,

Thank you for your prompt response Dr. Lam. I assume that you do not accept health insurance plans? I know in the past my plan has covered any keloid treatment (including excision) because the condition caused me discomfort.

Also, I am from out of state so wil likely do a phone consultation with you. I will send pictures as well.

Thank you

Dear Dr. Lam,

I am sort of in the same boat as the person above with a 3cm keloid on my chest I've had for 6 years. I'm considering radiation therapy but I'm from British Columbia. Can you give me a rough estimate as to how much the procedure would cost to remove my keloid at your clinic? Also, is the radiation going to be a safe procedure with very low risk of carcinoma and are proper precautions taken during radiation to protect surrounding tissues?

i do not offer estimates on the forum but if you send me a photo to my email drlam@lamfacialplastics.com i can take a look and give you one.

i personally believe long-term skin cancer risk is very low but i always defer my response to the radiation physician so you really should direct your question to him. i can set that up here on the Dallas side and you would have to be here for 5 days of radiation and suture removal at day 9 unless you can find someone to do that up there.

:)
