African American Rhinoplasty

Postby eyecandi17 » Thu Jul 08, 2010 10:42 am

Hi Dr. Sam, i found you through your youtube videos and i see you say one of your specialties is african american rhinoplasty. I'm wondering if i would be a good candidate for this procedure. Honestly speaking i love my nose in person but in pics it tends to look a tad wide. If i had my identical nose but just a bit smaller i would be happy;but that's the only thing about it i don't like.
Here are some pictures i took of it:

if i had to pick someones nose that i would like to resemble i would pick hers:

or hers(i think hers is more closer to my nose but a bit smaller):

In essence i'd just like my nose tip to be a bit smaller and a bit more defined and my nostrils not so wide. With the pics i posted i hope you can let me know if i would be right for this procedure. Thank You

hi,
yes, i do specialize in AA rhinoplasties. i am glad you showed me photos with women with broader nasal bases, as i believe reducing the nasal base can oftentimes make someone look a bit weird. i believe by a slight bridge elevation the bridge can be refined and the nasal tip with greater projection and refinement can make a very natural and beautiful result for AA's.
best,

Thanks for replying Dr. Lam. Around how much would the procedure cost?

Dr Lam,

I have a similar request as well. I'm half-filipino and half-black and I was looking at having a more "westernized"-looking nose without it taking away from my overall facial appearance and shape of my head. I can't provide any good "desired after" photos since I couldn't find any but I would like any suggestions you can offer based on your in-depth experience with AA rhinoplasty.

My nose is so dominating on my face and the profile shot of my nose has that slight parrot beak-shape that I'm not happy with.

There are other things I want done (laser skin resurfacing, and jaw/chin shape) as evidenced by my photo. Any suggestions here is appreciated as well.

Thanks.

hi,
in terms of the nose, i see that a tip graft to create a more refined nasal tip and slight bridge reshaping would help improve your appearance. because your skin is thick, you will need tape at night for 2 to 4 months after to help guide the skin down and thereby create the results you are desiring.

i also see for your face benefits for a chin implant, CROSS acne scar treatments with possible silicone injections to any larger holes that CROSS won't manage.
hope that helps as a start.
best,

Hi Dr. Lam... I have an interesting situation: I'm looking to get a nose job for two reasons 1. cosmetically, and 2. post nasal drip... to most people this would not be a problem, but I'm a professional singer and this has been a hell of a difficult vocal year for me starting with GERD to this and of course being that one's voice resonates through the nose I'm a bit scared and apprehensive... I was also thinking of getting a lip reduction... I know that you don't quote prices here in the forum, but I am located in NYC and being that I've heard such prominent things about your work and this not being something I can afford to mess around with; would I be able to have at least an estimate before having to come all the way out to Texas, And would you be able to do so via photos and/or skype or something of that nature? thanks so much in advance...

as far as treating post-nasal drip with rhinoplasty that does not make too much sense. treating the GERD or allergies will help with post-nasal drip. rhinoplasty will only help in your case for cosmetic reasons. as far as prices, yes, just email info@lamfacialplastics.com for one or two lip reduction prices. if you would like to do a photo consultation just send it to me at samlammd@yahoo.com. if you prefer a formal phone consultation, there is a $100 charge that could be applied toward a procedure. that needs to be set up. it would be easier to just call my office 972-312-8188 to set up a phone consult and ask for pricing.

Re: African American Rhinoplasty - UK

Postby abacadabra » Tue Jun 28, 2011 9:18 am

Hi Dr Lam,

I'm from London (african origin) and would really like rhinoplasty to straighten my nose and aslo to make the width a bit smaller without removing my ethnic identity. Initially I was considering non-surgical rhinoplasty (fillers) to get rid of the bump as I was not comfortable with many of the surgeons I've seen here performing surgery on my nose, when they haven't had much experience with AA noses.

Ideally I would love to come to the states to get my nose done by you but this may not be financially possible. Do you operate anywhere in Europe or would you be able to recommend a surgeon who uses the same procedures as you and has the same experience?

I really want to get this done so would greatly appreciate any advice you may have for me.

I look forward to hearing from you!!!

Dr. Lam--

I have a question about post-op AA rhinoplasty with a Medpor implant. I am a little over 3 weeks post-op. My surgeon used the implant to make up my bridge and tip to make it more masculine (I am asking you since for one, I do not get to see him until next week). I have been experiencing a bit of shifting, which I can feel against my nostrils (left nostril mostly). I am not experiencing any pain, nor have I been doing strenuous activities. I breathe just fine. If you could guess, is it shifting because of the swelling?

hi,
thanks for the question. however, two things:
1. i do not use medpor implants.
2. you must ask your surgeon about your recovery. i simply cannot answer that question since i have never seen you and i do not know what is going on. it is best to speak with your surgeon next week about it. sorry, i make it a point not to answer questions about immediate postop problems or concerns on here unless you are my patient.
