Juvista potential as Prophylactic scar treatment

This section of the forum is dedicated to discussions addressing linear scars, depressed scars, keloid scars, hypertrophic scars, and other facial reconstructive topics. (Of note, Dr. Lam no longer accepts medical insurance so he rarely manages cancer reconstruction or trauma anymore.)

Many thanks for the insight and information. I was wondering though I don't see any conclusive news wrt when juvista is going to make a debut. i do know it expects to report on its phase III results in Europe in the first half of 2011. That bit about it becoming available in 2014, can you clarify the source of this news? If this is true, it is quite the dampener because i was hoping it wouldn't take that long.

Yes, the outcome of the first phase 3 trial is due in the first half of 2011 and then there's another phase 3 trial coming after that...and if the FDA approves it, it will ultimately come around in 2014...approximately. Mark Ferguson, the CEO of Renovo (which is the company that is making Juvista) has stated that he expects his company to start making profits no sooner than 2015 as they are making losses right now, so yeah, it will be about 3 years until Juvista is available. I'll see if I can find a site where you can see the confirmation of this.

I just thought I'd add to the thread that I was wrong regarding the 2014 general release date. I've been told that Renovo said that it will start licencing Juvista worldwide apart from the USA, Mexico and Canada as soon as the first phase 3 trial is finished in 2011 and is succesful. So that's pretty exciting! Let's hope the results which will be presented next year will be something to write home about.

Hi Dr Lam,

I read with interest an article on BBC that talks about the use of insulin to reduce scarring
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/7685909.stm

The work does seem worthy of further exploration..though the sample size is notably too small to arrive at anything conclusively. What are your thoughts on this?

interesting. i just got back from Boston for my hair meeting and I learned that ACE inhibitors (used for blood pressure) can help with hypertrophic and keloid scarring. for example, topical 5% captopril used on the scar and/or 10 mg enalopril once a day for 6 months. i found it fascinating.
best,
