Keloid: Consistency of Radiation and excision

This section of the forum is dedicated to discussions addressing linear scars, depressed scars, keloid scars, hypertrophic scars, and other facial reconstructive topics. (Of note, Dr. Lam no longer accepts medical insurance so he rarely manages cancer reconstruction or trauma anymore.)

Keloid: Consistency of Radiation and excision

Postby mada5659 » Sun Mar 21, 2010 8:37 am

Dear Dr. Lam,

I e-mailed a year ago regrading keloid treatment methods and was informed that radiation therapy alongside with surgical excision has a success rate of over 90%. I was wondering if this method of treatment has been consistent? I am debating whether or not I should give this treatment a try but really worry about its effects. Please let me know how this treatment method is..
Thank you so very much!!

that is only the case if the excision is timed so that the radiation occurs less than 24 hours after the keloid is freshly removed. risks, etc. must be discussed with the radiation doctor not with me since it is only fair that they discuss all of those risks with you. if you are here in dallas, i can arrange the coordinated work with someone. if not, you will have to stay 5 days to finish all the rounds, plus sutures out at day 7.
best,
