How long must you be free of active acne for fillers?

This section of the forum is dedicated to discussions on managing, treating, and correcting acne scarring. (Of note, Dr. Lam is focused principally on acne scarring rather than on managing the ongoing condition of acne, which a dermatologist would be better equipped to address.)

How long must you be free of active acne for fillers?

Postby buckeye » Sat Jan 23, 2010 8:40 am

Hello Dr. Lam;

I'm a 24 Indian female in Ohio. I have rolling scars on my cheeks, closer to my nose (and icepick, but I don't mind living with those) and am really interested in micro silicone injections.

I had been acne free for close to a year and then I got on Adderall in December. I swear it made me break out, and as soon as I stopped it the acne went away. But I have post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. I don't really mind this either except for the fact that I was planning to make an appointment with you this year! How long would you recommend I wait before making an appointment? How long do you prefer your patients are acne-free before fillers?

Thanks!
buckeye

that is a great question. in general, it sounds as if you are safe to perform the procedure for a few reasons. first, it does not sound as if you still have significant, active acne. second, you are most likely complete with puberty-related acne, which can be severe. many women continue to have mild acne into their 30s, which typically does not prove to be a reason not to perform the treatment. of course, i would have to see you in person to fully decide.
best,
