is this doctor ripping me off??

Postby green46 » Sun Nov 15, 2009 10:27 pm

Hi Dr. Lam,

I am getting secondary rhinoplasty done from a plastic surgeon who specializes in rhinoplasty. although he has only been in practice for 3 years, he is partnered with a supposed authority on rhinoplasty.
He is charging me $4,000 for the cosmetic portion. He also insists on repairing collapsed airways and doing a bilateral graft (spreader?) to aid with breathing. These procedure are priced at $2000 each. which is an additional $4,000. Thus bringing his fee up to $8,000.This does not cover OR or anesthesia costs. I asked him if I could just do the cosmetic revision or just add one of the procedures to correct breathing instead of both, but he told me, "no, it's part of my technique and the both additional procedures need to be done." If it is part of his technique, is right for him to be charging me extra like this? Should I run the other way?

P.S. I do feel like I have some nasal obstruction (could be due to other issues), but the other two plastic surgeons that I had consultations with both told me I didn't have collapsed airways when I asked them. Nor did they suggest any extra surgical procedures to correct any supposed nasal breathing problems.

thank you,
green46
