Lip Scar Tissue

Postby AshleyF231 » Mon Jul 27, 2009 6:49 pm

Dr. Lam,
Two years ago, I slipped and nearly bit through my lower lip. I should've gotten a few stitches, but I never went to the hospital. It healed badly and I've had lumpy scar tissue ever since. I got one cortisone injection which softened it slightly about six weeks after the initial accident.
Approximately two weeks ago, I bit my lip hard while eating in the same place where my scar is located. I bit hard enough to have a sore for two days afterward, and since, have bit the same area several times. There is no visible wound on my lip; however, (and this may sound completely crazy), it's almost as though I have bitten through the connective scar tissue and it's moved some in my lip. I now have a lump that feels like a small ball of something on the inside of my lip near the top. I can even move it around. The lump itself does not hurt. It's never been like this before which is why I was wondering if it was scar tissue which shifted from accidentally biting it. It now rests against my teeth and I am very aware of it, whereas I was not before. It's not even a physical thing, but it's becoming an issue when I eat.

Thank you for your help.

your scar does not sound like it has migrated. it sounds as if it has gotten bigger from the recent trauma. i prefer to avoid steroids entirely because of the risk of atrophy to the tissues. i use 5-FU. within 2 to 3 rounds you should have pretty much a significant improvement (most likely). if you live in dallas, call my office 972-312-8188. i am booked until late october so schedule as soon as you would like. you can also put yourself on a cancellation list.
best,
sml
