Cheek augmentation

Postby havingfaith » Thu Jul 02, 2009 12:58 pm

Dr Lam,
I had cheekbone implants put in about 12 years ago. Now that I have aged I am looking for a more rounder shape around the cheekbone to break up a longer face. Is fat grafting applicable to that. Also if it is what does the injected fat feel like. Is it hard and how deep is it injected.

thanks

the best answer for your problem can be found in my video: "cheeks, the good the bad and the ugly" (http://www.lamfacialplastics.com/galler ... heeks.html). in that video i talk about how cheek implants when we age actually can make us look older. the reason is that when we get older as we lose fat, our cheek bones start to stick out and cheek implants only serve to make the bone stick out more (since it is a hard implant that looks like bone) and everything around it even hollower. fat grafting does the opposite, it softens the transitions, covers the implant and makes the face more uniform and more youthful. further, the fat is entirely soft not hard at all. however, the first 1 to 2 weeks, the transferred fat will feel very firm until it softens. the early firmness is due to swelling only. hope that makes sense.

btw, also, the goal is not to make a big cheek but to blend a cheek into the surrounding areas. watch my video on the 5% rule in plastic surgery. that is in my fat grafting home page with a link to understand that better: http://www.lamfacialplastics.com/galler ... rgery.html
